Medical Sample Resume: 6 Examples From Front Desk to Nurse

A medical sample resume puts your license or certification in the first lines, then your clinical or patient-facing experience with numbers a manager can check: patients per day, procedures, the records system you used and the setting you worked in. The constraint is that healthcare employers usually check credentials first, and many run the resume through software before a person reads it. CareerOneStop, the US Department of Labor's career site, warns in its resume guide that "An ATS can be set to filter out resumes that lack certain essential criteria, such as software skills, an education credential, or years of management experience." Below are six complete medical resume examples for different jobs and levels, how to list licenses, and the skills each role is screened on. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
Healthcare hiring has a strange rule: you can be the calmest person in a busy clinic, and the resume still gets filtered because it says "CPR certified" and the posting says "BLS". The examples below are built around that rule.
Medical assistant resume sample
A certified medical assistant is hired on two things: the certification and the clinical tasks you can do without supervision. Put the credential next to your name and list the tasks the posting names, in its words.

Registered nurse resume sample
Nursing resumes lead with the license, the specialty and the unit. A hiring nurse manager wants to know your ratio, your patient population and the certifications the unit requires before reading anything else.

Our nursing resume guide and the registered nurse resume page have more nursing versions.

How to list licenses and certifications on a medical resume
Put the most important credential after your name, then a full certifications section near the top. Write each one the way the issuing body writes it, with the issuer, because "CPR certified" and "Basic Life Support (BLS), American Heart Association" are not the same line to a screener. The American Heart Association lists its course as "Basic Life Support (BLS)" on its course options page, so use that name if that is the card you hold.
- License: type, state and whether it is a multistate license.
- Certifications: full name, abbreviation and issuing body.
- Expiry: add the valid through date if the posting asks for current certification.
- Pending credentials: write "exam scheduled" with the month, never the credential itself.
Skills to put on a medical resume
Pick skills from the posting, then group them so a manager can scan them:
- Clinical: vital signs, venipuncture, injections, EKG, wound care, specimen collection.
- Systems: the EHR by name (Epic, Oracle Health Cerner, athenahealth, eClinicalWorks), practice management and billing software.
- Administrative: insurance verification, prior authorizations, scheduling templates, HIPAA-compliant records handling.
- Patient-facing: languages spoken, patient education, de-escalation at the front desk.
CareerOneStop's advice on keywords applies twice in healthcare: "Use the exact terms in your resume." If the posting says phlebotomy, write phlebotomy, not blood draws.
Common mistakes on medical resumes
- Credential buried at the bottom. Many screeners never get there.
- Duties without numbers. Patients per day, encounters coded and specimens processed are what separate two resumes with the same title.
- No EHR named. Training someone on a new system costs a practice time, so the system you know is a real selling point.
- Patient information in examples. Describe volume and types of cases, never anything that could identify a patient.
Harvard's career office says in its resume guide that a resume "should highlight your strongest assets and skills, and differentiate you from other candidates seeking similar positions." In healthcare, where many candidates hold the same credential, the numbers and the system names are what differentiate you. Frequently asked questions
What should a medical resume include?
Your license or certification next to your name, a short summary with your setting and patient volume, experience with numbers such as patients per day or encounters coded, the EHR systems you use, a certifications section with issuing bodies, and education. Use the exact terms from the job posting, since many healthcare employers screen with software first.
How do I write a medical resume with no experience?
Lead with your training and certification, then your clinical externship or practicum with the hours and tasks you performed. Add any patient or customer-facing work, such as retail or reception, and name the skills it shares with the job. A certification such as CMA or BLS listed with its issuer matters more than a long objective.
Where do certifications go on a medical resume?
Put the main credential after your name, such as Jordan Ellis, CMA (AAMA), and list all licenses and certifications in their own section near the top, with the full name, abbreviation and issuing body. For nurses, a License and Certifications section above the summary is common because managers check it first.
Should a medical resume be one page?
One page works for most entry and mid level roles such as medical assistant, receptionist or coder. Two pages are fine for experienced nurses, technologists and managers with several positions and certifications. Physicians and researchers usually send a CV instead, which has no page limit and lists publications, training and licenses in full.
Is a medical resume different from a medical CV?
Yes. In the US a medical resume is a one to two page summary used for clinical support, nursing, technical and administrative jobs. A medical CV is the longer academic record used by physicians, residents and researchers, with training, publications, presentations and licenses listed in full. Outside the US, CV often just means resume.
