An application letter for a student is a one page letter of three or four short paragraphs: the job you want and how you heard about it, what your classes, activities or part-time work have already proved you can do, why this employer, and when you are free to start or interview. Students do not need work history to write a strong one. They need one specific example in place of every general claim. CareerOneStop, the US Department of Labor's career site, sets the length: "A good letter can be about 200-400 words, with just 3-4 short paragraphs." Below is a fill-in template and five complete letters, from a high school student asking for a weekend shift to a graduate student applying for a research assistantship. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

Every example below uses invented names, schools and employers. Keep the structure and put your own details in.

Application letter for student: the template

This is the layout US employers expect. Type it into a blank document, replace the brackets and delete any line you do not need. If you send it by email, drop the address block and put the job title in the subject line, as our job application email guide shows.

Dear [Mr./Ms. Last name or Hiring Manager],

I am a [year] student at [school] applying for the [job title] position I saw on [where you found it]. [One line on why this job or employer interests you.]

[Your strongest proof: a class project, club role, part-time job or volunteer work, with a number or a result.]

Thank you for considering my application. My resume is attached, and I am available to interview [days or times]. I look forward to hearing from you.

The format rules are short. MIT Career Advising puts them this way: "A cover letter should be no longer than one page with a font size between 10-12 points." Use the same font as your resume, single spacing, and one blank line between paragraphs.

Part-time job application letter for a high school student

A store manager hiring a sixteen year old is asking three questions: will you show up, can you count change, and when can you work. Answer all three. Your proof comes from school, sports, chores that involved money, or volunteering. Pair the letter with a high school student resume of one page.

Dear Ms. Varga,

I am a junior at Lakemont High School applying for the weekend cashier position at Pell Creek Grocers that was posted on your store's front door. My family has shopped at your Main Street store for years, and I would like to work somewhere I already know well.

For the last two years I have run the cash box at our school's Friday concession stand. I count the starting float, make change for about 150 customers a night, and balance the box with our advisor at the end of the game. We have not been short once this season.

I am also on the varsity cross country team, which means I am used to early mornings and keeping a schedule. I can work Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the school year and full days in the summer.

Thank you for considering my application. I have attached my resume and can come in for an interview any weekday after 3:30 p.m.

Sincerely, Jordan Ellery

If you have truly never handled money or a schedule, use school attendance and a teacher who will vouch for you. A line such as "I have missed two days of school in three years" answers the reliability question better than "I am very responsible."

Application letter for a college student applying for a campus job

Campus employers hire around class schedules, so the letter has to show you can do the work and say exactly when you are free. Library, dining, lab and front desk jobs all value accuracy and calm with the public. A first year student can draw on high school jobs, clubs and the first semester itself.

Priya Raman Halvorsen College, Box 2214 | (608) 555-0193 | praman@halvorsen.edu

Dear Mr. Okafor,

I am a first year student at Halvorsen College applying for the circulation desk assistant position listed on the student employment portal. I spend most evenings studying on the second floor of Torvik Library, and I would like to help keep it running.

In high school I worked two summers at the front desk of a community pool, where I checked in about 200 members a day, handled lost and found, and answered the phone. I learned to stay polite when the line was long and someone was unhappy about a rule I did not make.

This semester I am taking an introduction to information science course, and I have already used the library catalog and interlibrary loan system for two research papers, so I know the questions students ask at the desk.

My classes end by 1 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and I can work any evening shift until midnight. Thank you for your time. My resume is attached.

Sincerely, Priya Raman

Internship application letter for a university student

An internship letter carries more weight than a campus job letter, because the employer is choosing someone to train. Lead with coursework and one project that matches the role, and name the semester or summer you want. Our internship cover letter guide goes deeper on internships alone. If you are applying to a consulting internship, our McKinsey cover letter examples show the same structure for business analyst roles.

Mid level student: college junior, summer marketing internship (208 words)

Marcus Delacroix Columbus, OH | (614) 555-0128 | marcus.delacroix@email.com

Dear Ms. Whitfield,

I am a junior studying marketing at Brennan State University, and I am applying for the summer 2027 marketing internship at Corliss & Vane Outdoor that I found through our career center's job board. Your trail guide emails are the only brand newsletter I open every week, and I want to learn how that team decides what goes in them.

Last semester my consumer behavior class split into teams to plan an email campaign for a local bike shop. I wrote the subject lines and ran the A/B test on two versions. The version I pushed for had a higher open rate on the shop's list of 1,100 customers, and the owner still uses the template.

I also manage the Instagram account for our campus hiking club. I grew it from 300 to 900 followers in a year by posting trip photos within a day and asking members to tag the club.

I can start on May 24, 2027, and work full time through mid August. My resume and a two page campaign sample are attached. Thank you for considering my application, and I would welcome the chance to talk about the internship.

Sincerely, Marcus Delacroix

Application letter for a nursing or clinical student

Clinical employers read for safety first. Name your program, your clinical rotations, the skills you are signed off on, and your certification such as Basic Life Support. Keep it factual, because the person reading it supervises students and knows exactly what a second year can and cannot do. A nursing student resume carries the full rotation list.

Alyssa Benton Dayton, OH | (937) 555-0172 | abenton@email.com

Dear Ms. Harrow,

I am a rising senior in the BSN program at Westmoor University, applying for the summer student patient care technician position on the medical surgical unit at Tamsworth Valley Medical Center, posted on your careers page.

I have completed clinical rotations in medical surgical nursing, long term care and pediatrics, about 360 clinical hours in total. On my medical surgical rotation I took vital signs, recorded intake and output, and helped with turns and ambulation for up to four patients per shift under my preceptor. I hold a current American Heart Association BLS card.

Before nursing school I worked a year as a dietary aide at a senior living community, so I am comfortable with early shifts, call lights and families who have questions.

I can work three 12 hour shifts a week from June through August, including weekends. My resume and clinical skills checklist are attached. Thank you for your consideration, and I would be glad to meet with you or the unit manager.

Sincerely, Alyssa Benton

Application letter for a graduate student assistantship

A faculty member hiring a research or teaching assistant is looking for someone who can work without supervision on day one. Name the method, the software and the result of your past work, and connect it to the lab's own research. A graduate student resume or CV goes with it.

Complete Senior student: master's student, research assistant in a public health lab example, 185 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Senior student: master's student, research assistant in a public health lab (185 words)

Daniel Osei Department of Public Health, Kessler University | dosei@kessler.edu

Dear Dr. Lindqvist,

I am a first year Master of Public Health student in the epidemiology track at Kessler University, and I am applying for the graduate research assistant position in your Community Health Data Lab, posted on the department listserv.

As an undergraduate I spent two years in a nutrition research group, where I cleaned and coded survey data from about 2,400 households in R and built the summary tables for a conference poster. I wrote the codebook the group still uses for new students.

I read your lab's recent paper on clinic travel times in rural counties, and I am interested in the mapping work. I have completed a graduate course in GIS and used it to map food store access for my class project.

I can commit 20 hours a week for the academic year and will stay on campus in the summer. My CV and a short writing sample are attached. Thank you for considering my application, and I would be happy to meet during your office hours.

Sincerely, Daniel Osei

What a student writes when there is no work experience

No work history is normal, and the employer reading a student letter expects it. Swap the job you do not have for evidence you do have.

The first job resume guide shows how to put the same proof on the resume that goes with the letter.

Mistakes that sink a student application letter

Harvard's career office reminds students that "Your cover letter is a writing sample and a part of the screening process." The reader judges the writing as much as the content, so these five slips cost more than they look.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write an application letter as a student?

Write one page with three or four short paragraphs. Name the job and where you saw it, give one or two specific examples from school, activities or part-time work, say why you want this employer, and finish with when you are available. Address it to a named person whenever you can find one.

How long should a student application letter be?

About 200 to 400 words and never more than one page. A high school letter for a part-time job can sit at the short end. An internship or graduate assistantship letter usually needs the full length to show coursework and one project.

Is an application letter the same as a cover letter?

In the US, yes. Employers use both names for the one page letter that goes with your resume. Some schools and countries use "application letter" for a letter sent without a job ad, but the structure is the same. Our how to write a cover letter guide covers the general version.

Should a student put GPA in an application letter?

Only if it is strong and the job is academic or competitive, such as an internship or assistantship, or if the posting asks for it. Otherwise leave it on the resume and use the letter for examples the resume cannot tell.

Can a high school student send an application letter by email?

Yes. Put the job title and your name in the subject line, write the letter in the body of the email without the address block, and attach your resume as a PDF. Use an email address with your name in it rather than a nickname.
