Chief Investment Officer Resume: 5 Examples and Tips

A chief investment officer resume is read by an investment committee, a search consultant or a board chair, and all three want the same four facts in the first half page: the assets you oversee, the mandate you run, the process you built and how the portfolio did against its benchmark over a stated period. The one constraint: performance figures on an investment resume are a compliance question as much as a writing one, so quote returns only the way your firm already presents them, with the period and the benchmark next to the number. O*NET describes investment fund managers as people who "Plan, direct, or coordinate investment strategy or operations for a large pool of liquid assets supplied by institutional investors or individual investors." Below are five complete examples, tagged by level and type of asset owner, plus the section order that works. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
You know the feeling. You sat through forty investment committee meetings, rebuilt the asset allocation twice and survived a drawdown with your job and your nerves intact, and the resume template wants a "skills" section with the word Excel in it. You can leave Excel out. The committee assumes it.
First-time chief investment officer resume example
The usual route into the seat is from a deputy CIO, head of a sleeve or senior portfolio manager role. The resume should show you already make allocation decisions and talk to the committee, not only that you pick securities well.

Spell the title out at least once. "CIO" on its own also means chief information officer, and a search consultant scanning a database does not want to guess.
What an investment committee reads on a CIO resume
The task list for the job is short and heavy. O*NET's profile names tasks such as "Develop or implement fund investment policies or strategies" and "Monitor financial or operational performance of individual investments to ensure portfolios meet risk goals." A committee reads your resume looking for proof of both: that you set policy and that you watched risk.
Four things get read first:
- Assets and mandate. Total assets, asset owner type (endowment, pension, family office, insurer, wealth firm) and the mandate, such as total portfolio, fixed income or alternatives.
- Process. The investment policy statement, asset allocation reviews, risk budgets and manager selection process you built or changed.
- Results. Returns against the policy benchmark over a stated period, or risk and liability outcomes for insurers and pension plans, presented the way your firm already reports them.
- Governance. How often you report to the committee or board, the team you lead and the outside consultants you manage.
Credentials matter at this level. The CFA Institute says that "As a CFA charterholder, you will be qualified to hold senior and executive positions in investment management, risk management, asset management, and more." Put the charter after your name and again in the credentials block.

How to write each section of a chief investment officer resume
Header and summary. Name with credentials, then three lines: asset owner type, assets, mandate and the result you want remembered.
Experience. Open each role with a scope line (assets, asset classes, team). Then four to six bullets on policy, allocation, manager selection, risk and governance. Keep returns to the format your firm has approved.
Credentials. CFA, CAIA, FRM and any licenses you still hold. Only current ones.
Education. Degrees at the bottom. Dates are optional at this level.
Board and committee work. Investment committees of nonprofits, trustee seats and advisory boards belong in their own short section.
For the step below, see our portfolio manager resume and investment analyst resume pages, and the CFO resume if you report into finance. Keep the layout plain for screening software using our ATS friendly resume guide, and see resume summary vs objective before you write the top three lines. If a role abroad asks for a CV, read CV vs resume.
Mistakes that sink a chief investment officer resume
- Returns with no period and no benchmark. A number on its own invites the wrong question.
- Quoting performance your employer has not approved for outside use.
- Writing "CIO" without spelling out the title, so the resume lands in technology searches.
- Listing asset classes without saying what you decided in any of them.
- Leaving out the committee. Governance is half the job, and the reader is the committee.
Frequently asked questions
What should a chief investment officer resume include?
Include the assets you oversee, the asset owner type, your mandate, the investment policy and allocation work you led, manager selection, risk oversight and committee reporting. Add credentials such as the CFA charter, the size of your team and results against a benchmark over a stated period, presented the way your firm already reports them.
Should I put investment returns on my CIO resume?
Only in the form your firm already presents them, with the period and the benchmark beside the figure. Many firms restrict how past performance is shown, so check with compliance before you include a number. If you cannot share returns, describe the process, the risk outcomes and the scope instead.
How long should a chief investment officer resume be?
Two pages is standard. Put your current and previous roles on page one with full bullets, then compress earlier roles to title, firm type, dates and one line. Board seats, investment committee memberships and credentials can sit on page two in short sections.
Do I need a CFA to become a chief investment officer?
It is not a legal requirement, and committees will ask about it either way; the CFA Institute describes charterholders as qualified for senior and executive investment roles. If you do not hold it, lead with your track record, committee experience and any other credentials you hold, such as CAIA or FRM.
