CIO Sample Resumes: 6 Full Examples by Company Type

The CIO sample resumes that get interviews open with the size of what you ran (budget, team, users, sites) and then prove three or four business results, not a list of technologies. A board or CEO hiring a chief information officer reads for judgment: what you decided, what it cost, what it saved or enabled, and how you handled the outage or the breach. The O*NET profile for computer and information systems managers sums the job up as "Plan, direct, or coordinate activities in such fields as electronic data processing, information systems, systems analysis, and computer programming." A CIO resume has to show that at company scale. Below are six full CIO resume examples, from a first time CIO to an interim CIO, checked against O*NET in October 2026. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
CIO resume example: IT director stepping up

CIO resume sample for manufacturing
Manufacturing CIOs are judged on plant uptime, ERP and MES integration, and how well they protect operational technology. Name the plants, the systems on the floor and the downtime you prevented. In a factory, disaster recovery means the line keeps running.

CIO resume for government

CIO resume for a software company
In a software business the CIO runs internal systems and security while the CTO runs the product. Make that split clear, or the reader will assume you are applying for the wrong job. Lead with growth you supported: headcount, acquisitions, audits passed.

Interim CIO resume example
Interim and fractional CIOs sell short, sharp engagements. Group them under one heading, give each a line on the situation you walked into and the result you left behind, and say what kind of company calls you. This format also works for consultants moving back into a permanent role.

The CIO resume order that works
Two pages is normal for a CIO. CareerOneStop, the US Department of Labor's career site, gives the range in its resume guidelines: "Keep the resume to 1-2 pages." Our guide to the two page resume covers how to split the pages. Use this order:
- Header: name, city, phone, email, LinkedIn. No photo.
- Summary: company size, budget, team, reporting line, then two or three results.
- Experience: reverse chronological. Every role gets a scope line and three to five results.
- Board and advisory roles: only if they are real and current.
- Education and certifications: degrees, then a short list such as CISSP or an executive program.
The O*NET task list starts with "Direct daily operations of department, analyzing workflow, establishing priorities, developing standards and setting deadlines." That describes an IT manager. A CIO resume has to go a level up: strategy, money, risk and the executive table. If the most senior bullet on your page is still about daily operations, rewrite it.
What makes a CIO resume stand out
A CIO is hired for decisions. Write bullets that show a decision and its result: what you chose to stop, what you bought, what you built, what you protected. Put the security incident or outage you handled on the page, briefly, because every board will ask about it.
Avoid a skills list of twenty tools. A CIO who lists Microsoft 365 and Slack is pitching for the wrong job. Name the platforms only where they carried business weight, like the ERP or EHR you rolled out. Our guide to resume summary examples shows how to fit scope and results into three lines, and the IT director resume and chief digital officer resume pages cover the neighboring roles. Use an ATS friendly layout: recruiters for executive roles still run the file through a system first.
Frequently asked questions
What should a CIO resume include?
A summary with company size, IT budget, team size and reporting line, followed by three to five results per role that show decisions: systems replaced, money saved, audits passed, incidents handled. Add board or committee work if you present to one, then education and a short certification list. Two pages is normal at this level.
How long should a CIO resume be?
Two pages for most CIOs. One page works only for a first time CIO with a short career, and three pages is too long for any reader. Keep the first half of page one strong enough that the reader could decide from it alone, because many will.
What is the difference between a CIO and a CTO resume?
A CIO resume leads with internal systems, business operations, security and the IT budget. A CTO resume leads with the product, the engineering team and the technical platform customers use. In software companies the two roles often sit side by side, so state your lane in the summary to avoid being read as the wrong fit.
How do I write a CIO resume without CIO experience?
Lead with the scope you already hold as an IT director or vice president: budget, team, reporting line and seat at the leadership table. Show business results, not projects, and name the executive you worked with. The first sample on this page shows an IT director applying for a first CIO role.
Should a CIO resume list certifications?
List a few that a board recognizes, such as CISSP, PMP or an executive education program, after education. Leave out vendor certifications from early in your career. At CIO level, certifications support the story and rarely decide it, so keep them to one or two lines.
