Computer Programmer Sample Resume: 6 Examples by Level

A computer programmer sample resume works when it puts your languages and the kind of programs you maintain at the top, then proves each job with a program you wrote or fixed and what changed. One constraint shapes the whole page: programmer postings are screened by language first, so a resume that hides Java, COBOL or SQL in the fourth bullet loses to one that names them in the summary. The duty wording below comes from the O*NET profile for Computer Programmers (15-1251.00), checked in October 2026. Six complete resumes follow, from a first programming job to a senior programmer analyst. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.
You have spent three years keeping a payroll system alive that nobody else in the building understands, and your resume says "responsible for coding." That is not a description of your job. That is a description of a keyboard.
Start with the entry level example, because most people searching for a sample resume are writing their first or second one.

EXPERIENCE Programming Intern, Buckeye Mutual Insurance, Columbus, OH | Jan 2026 to Jun 2026 - Fixed 41 defects in the Java policy rating module, each with a unit test that reproduced the bug first. - Rewrote a nightly SQL extract that timed out twice a week; it has run on schedule every night since. - Documented the claims batch jobs in the team wiki, which the team now uses to onboard new hires.

What a computer programmer resume has to prove
A programmer resume is read twice: first by software that matches the languages in the posting, then by a lead programmer who wants to know whether you can work inside an existing codebase. The O*NET task list is a good map of what that second reader checks. It starts with "Write, analyze, review, and rewrite programs, using workflow chart and diagram, and applying knowledge of computer capabilities, subject matter, and symbolic logic." and includes "Correct errors by making appropriate changes and rechecking the program to ensure that the desired results are produced."
That second task is most of the job in many shops, and it is the part most resumes leave out. Maintenance, defect fixing and testing are what a programmer does all week, so say how many defects, which modules and what stopped breaking.
Keep the order simple:
- Header with city, phone, email and a code link if you have public work worth reading.
- Summary of three lines: title, years, languages, the kind of programs you maintain.
- Skills grouped by type. The CareerOneStop resume guide notes that "It's typical to list your skills in columns, referencing software, other digital tools, or short phrases, such as “Proficient in Python” or just “Python”."
- Experience with a program, an action and a result in every bullet.
- Projects if you are early in your career or changing fields.
- Education and certifications.

Skills for a computer programmer resume
Group skills so a reader can scan them in one pass: languages, frameworks, databases, tools and practices. CareerOneStop is direct about what belongs there: "Technical skills and other job-specific skills are the typical focus." and "Include only skills that are relevant to the job."
Match the posting before anything else. If the advert asks for Java, Spring and Oracle, those three words should appear in your summary and skills, spelled the way the advert spells them. Our guide to ATS keywords from real job ads shows how that matching works, and computer skills for a resume covers the general office and software list if you are writing your first one.
Experience bullets that show programming work
A programmer bullet needs three parts: the program or module, what you did to it, and what changed. O*NET lists "Conduct trial runs of programs and software applications to be sure they will produce the desired information and that the instructions are correct." as a core task, so testing belongs in your bullets too.
| Weak bullet | Strong bullet |
|---|---|
| Responsible for coding and debugging | Fixed 41 defects in the Java policy rating module, each with a unit test |
| Worked on database tasks | Rewrote a nightly SQL extract that timed out twice a week |
| Helped with system migration | Moved 22 SSIS packages to a new server with no missed nightly runs |
Start each bullet with a strong verb. Our list of resume action verbs has before and after pairs for technical roles.
Computer programmer or software engineer?
Many employers use the titles loosely, but the jobs differ. A computer programmer usually writes and maintains code to a specification someone else wrote; a software engineer usually designs the system as well. Use the title the posting uses. If you design systems and lead architecture choices, our software engineer resume page is the closer match, and if you are a student, the computer science CV guide covers projects and coursework in more depth.
Harvard's career office puts the rule in one line: "Tailor your resume to the type of position you’re seeking."
Frequently asked questions
What should a computer programmer put on a resume?
Your languages and tools, the kind of programs you write or maintain, and one result per job: defects fixed, a report automated, a batch job that now finishes on time. Add a projects section if you have under two years of experience, and keep the layout to one page unless you have over ten years of relevant work.
How do I write a computer programmer resume with no experience?
Lead with projects and coursework instead of jobs. Name the language, what the program does and who uses it, even if that is a club or a family business. Add internships, tutoring or IT support work, and put your degree, certificate or bootcamp near the top with the languages you learned.
Should a programmer resume include a GitHub link?
Yes, if the code there is yours, recent and readable. A reviewer may open one repository, so pin your best project and give it a short README. If your work is all private company code, leave the link out and describe the programs in your experience bullets instead.
How long should a computer programmer resume be?
One page for under ten years of experience. Two pages are fine for senior programmers and mainframe specialists whose environment list is long. Cut older jobs to one line each before you cut the skills that match the posting, because those decide whether a person sees the resume at all.
Is a programmer analyst resume different from a programmer resume?
Slightly. A programmer analyst also gathers requirements and talks to business users, so the resume adds bullets about interviews with users, specifications written and changes supported in production. The skills section and layout stay the same as on any computer programmer sample resume.
