CV Format for Engineers: Layout, Sections and 6 Examples

The best CV format for engineers is reverse chronological, one column, with a technical skills block and a selected projects block above or inside the experience section, and licensure stated in the header. The constraint is that every project line must carry scope, your part and a result, because an engineering manager reads for what you designed, not what the team delivered. NCEES calls the FE exam "generally your first step in the process of becoming a licensed professional engineer (P.E.)", so where you stand on that path belongs near the top. Below is the section order, six complete CVs from graduate to engineering manager, checked in October 2026, and the formatting choices that cost interviews. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

Engineers tend to write a CV the way they write a design report: every assumption stated, every project in the order it happened, nothing left out in case it matters. The person reading it wants the abstract.

The engineering CV format, section by section

Americans say resume; India, the UK and the Gulf say CV. The format is the same. Only research posts want a long curriculum vitae.

Mid level engineering CV examples

From three years on, the experience section takes over and the projects block moves inside each job. The context line under the employer is the part most engineers skip, and it is the line that tells the reader whether your work transfers.

Senior and licensed engineer CV format

A senior CV keeps the same order and goes to two pages. Purdue OWL puts the length question fairly. After the familiar advice to keep it to a page, it adds: "Although this is true for most cases, many employers are accepting longer résumés...in certain instances." Ten years of stamped designs is one of those instances. What changes at this level is that the PE goes in the header and the bullets move from tasks to decisions you signed.

At manager level the format stays technical, because the hiring panel still wants to know you could check the numbers. Add a line on people and budget under each job, and keep one technical bullet per role.

Licensure, chartership and how to write them

Write licensure exactly. NCEES says the FE exam "is designed for recent graduates and students who are close to finishing an undergraduate engineering degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited program", and that the PE exam "is designed for engineers who have gained a minimum of four years post-college work experience in their chosen engineering discipline." So a graduate writes EIT or EI with the state, a working engineer writes the PE states, and someone in between writes "FE passed, PE expected" with a year only if it is booked.

UK and international readers use chartership instead. The Engineering Council says registration "provides independent assurance that an engineer or technician has demonstrated the competence, commitment and ethical practice required by nationally recognised standards." Write CEng, IEng or EngTech after your name and the institution in the licenses block.

Formatting mistakes that cost engineering interviews

I wrote job adverts for my own company, so I knew exactly which four things I was looking for, and most CVs never mentioned any of them. For engineers the fix is to read the posting, pick the four requirements and make sure each one has a bullet with a number.

Where to go next

For one discipline in depth, see the civil engineer resume, mechanical engineer resume and electrical engineer resume pages. The letter that goes with the CV is covered in our engineering cover letter examples, and the broader layout question in the resume format guide. If your CV goes through an online portal, check it against our ATS friendly resume guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best CV format for engineers?

Reverse chronological, one column, with a header that includes your licensure, a three line summary, a technical skills block, experience with a context line under each job, and a selected projects block. Graduates put projects before experience. Use real text, not images or skill bars, so applicant tracking software reads every line.

How long should an engineering CV be?

One page for graduates and engineers with under five years, two pages for senior and licensed engineers with a long project history. Purdue OWL notes that many employers accept longer resumes in certain instances. Academic and research posts are the exception, where a full curriculum vitae lists publications and can run longer.

Should engineers put projects on their CV?

Yes. A selected projects block is where an engineer proves design work, and for graduates it is often stronger than the internship. Give each project its scope, your exact part and a measurable result, such as a reduced peak flow, a lower part count or a passed test, rather than describing what the whole team built.

Where do I put my PE or EIT on a CV?

In the header after your name, and again in a licenses block with the state and year. Write EIT or EI once you pass the FE exam, and PE with every state where you hold a license. If you are working toward the PE, write that the FE is passed and leave out a date until the exam is booked.

Is an engineering CV the same as an engineering resume?

For private sector jobs, yes. In the US the document is called a resume, while in the UK, India and the Gulf the same one or two page document is called a CV. The format does not change. Only academic and research positions expect a longer curriculum vitae with publications, conferences and grants.
