Laboratory Assistant Resume: 6 Samples for Every Level

By · Published · Updated

A laboratory assistant resume proves two things: you can follow a procedure exactly, and you can keep a record that someone else can trust. Below are six complete laboratory assistant resumes, from a student with one teaching lab to a lab supervisor, checked in November 2026. Pick the closest one, keep the structure and swap in your own equipment, sample counts and error rates.

Lab hiring managers read a list of "pipetting, centrifuge, PCR" the way you read a menu in a language you half speak. They recognise the words and learn nothing. Put a number and an outcome next to each technique and the menu becomes a meal.

Example 1: a student with teaching labs and one research semester

If your only lab time is coursework and a semester in a professor's group, say so and make the work specific: which assays, how many samples, who checked your results.

What the sources say a lab assistant does

The U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET entry for biological technicians describes the role in its opening lines: "Set up, operate, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment, monitor experiments, collect data and samples, make observations, and calculate and record results." That sentence is a ready outline for your bullets: set up, operate, maintain, monitor, collect, record.

O*NET also lists the task "Keep detailed logs of all work-related activities." If you kept the logbook, say what went into it and how often it was checked. Another listed task is "Clean, maintain and prepare supplies and work areas." It is unglamorous, and it is also a real part of the job, so list it in one honest line.

On layout, MIT's career office describes the document in its resume guide and Harvard's career services does the same in its guide to a strong resume. Harvard's page says "Within headings, list information in reverse chronological order (most recent first)". Lab resumes follow that rule too.

How to adapt a sample

For the skills section on its own, see our lab skills resume guide. For the technician level, see the lab technician resume and the medical lab technician resume. The student resume page is useful if you are applying while still in school. Our resume format guide covers layout, and the resume skills guide helps with the skills list.

What to leave out

Frequently asked questions

What should a laboratory assistant resume include?

Contact details, a two-line summary, a lab skills list with named techniques and equipment, experience bullets with counts, and education and safety training.

How do I write a laboratory assistant resume with no experience?

Treat teaching labs and research projects as the job. Name the assays you ran, how many samples you handled and who checked your results.

Is a lab assistant the same as a lab technician?

Not always. The titles overlap, but assistants usually prepare, clean and support, while technicians more often run and report tests on their own. Use the title on your offer or pay stub.

Should I list lab safety training?

Yes. Bloodborne pathogens, biosafety, chemical hygiene and OSHA training belong in a short certifications line with the year.

How long should the resume be?

One page for most lab assistants. Two pages only if you have many years of lab roles or a long list of methods you can show proof for.
