Research Ability Resume: 6 Examples With Skill Bullets

You show research ability on a resume by naming the question you worked on, the method you used and what the answer changed. Below are six complete resumes that do this, for an undergraduate research assistant, a graduate researcher, a lab technician, a market research analyst, a UX researcher and a senior policy researcher, checked in November 2026. Each one puts research ability in the bullets, where it can be checked, and not in a line that says "strong research skills".
Almost every resume claims research skills. Almost none of them says what was researched, how, or what anybody did with the answer. That gap is the whole opportunity: a bullet with a method and an outcome beats five adjectives.
Example 1: an undergraduate research assistant
If your research was a course project or a lab position, list it as experience. Name the lab, the supervisor, the method and what you produced.

What the universities say
Research counts in every kind of job, and career offices say so. Binghamton University's career centre says in its guide to adding research experience to a resume or CV: "The experience gained through research, whether or not you plan to pursue an academic or research-focused career path, demonstrates skills that are valuable to employers."
Oregon State University tells students to look past the tasks. In its page on adding research to a resume it says: "Working as a research assistant is an extremely valuable experience that gives you skills you can carry with you into other professional settings." It also gives a formula for the bullets: an action verb, the task or project and the result.
The University of Missouri's undergraduate research office adds detail on what to include in its guide to putting research on a resume: "Always include your mentor’s information." It also asks you to make job titles understandable to the reviewer, so a programme acronym becomes a plain description.

How to write research ability bullets
- Start with the question. What was being asked, and by whom?
- Name the method. Survey, interview, experiment, field sampling, literature review, statistical model.
- Give the scale. Participants, samples, hours, sites, years.
- End with the use. A paper, a decision, a changed process, a funded proposal.
- Keep the tools to one line. R, SPSS, Stata, Tableau, NVivo, whatever you used.

What to leave out
- The phrase strong research skills. It claims the skill without proving it.
- A list of every lab technique. Keep the ones the job names.
- Results you cannot discuss. Be ready to explain every figure in an interview.
- Confidential data or participant details. Describe the work, not the people or the client.
- Unpublished work presented as published. Write under review or in preparation.
