Resume for Homemakers: 7 Examples for Returning to Work

A resume for homemakers is an ordinary resume with one honest line about the years at home, a short summary that points at the job you want now, and bullets built from what you actually ran: budgets, schedules, schools, volunteer teams and, if you have them, courses. Below are seven complete resumes, checked in November 2026, for people coming back to paid work, from a first job after years at home to a senior manager returning after a long break. The same layouts work as a resume for housewives, stay-at-home parents and full-time carers. Copy the one closest to you and swap in your own details.
Some job adverts ask for "continuous experience" from the one person who has been running a household of five on a fixed budget, with a calendar no software could survive. The advert is the problem there, not your gap. Write the page so a shortlister can see what you can do on Monday morning.
Example 1: a first paid job after years at home
If you have never had a paid job, lead with skills and volunteer work and keep the page to one sheet. Do not apologize for the empty rows.

What the official sources say about the gap
The Alberta government's career service is plain about the gap itself, in its guide to returning to work after a career break: "The main thing is not to hide the gap but to explain it honestly". Its advice for the interview matches the resume: "Keep your explanation brief and positive". One line on the page, one calm sentence in the room.
Wake Forest University's alumni career center says the years count in its advice on listing caregiving on a resume: "The time you’ve spent away from a professional work environment has value." On volunteer roles it is just as direct: "These deserve space on your resume." Give them their own heading, such as Volunteer Experience or Community Involvement.
The University of California, Berkeley's career center answers the question people worry about most, in its resume guide: "It is not important that you were paid for your work, only that you can do it." That sentence is why the PTA treasurer, the rota organizer and the person who kept a parent's care running all have material for a resume.

How to lay out a resume for homemakers
- Contact line. Name, town, phone and email. No photo, age or marital status.
- Summary. Two or three lines: who you are, what you did before or at home, and the job you want now.
- Skills. Six to ten that appear in the job advert and are true of you.
- Experience. If you have paid jobs, list them with dates. For the years at home, add one entry with a plain title such as Household Manager or Family Career Break, and put your projects, volunteer roles and courses under it.
- Education and training. Recent courses go first, because they show you are current.
- Length. One page for a first job, two at most for a long career.
Wake Forest suggests asking people in your target industry whether a "Full-time Caregiver or Stay-at-home Parent" title will land well there, since some industries accept it more easily than others. If the answer is no, use Household Manager or Family Career Break, or put the years in your summary and leave them off the dated list. The Alberta guide also suggests a functional layout that highlights skills over dates, but a reverse-chronological layout with a skills list at the top is the safer choice if your last paid job is within ten years.
For more on how to word the gap, read our guide to employment gaps on a resume and the stay-at-home parent returning to work resume. If your break was long, the resume for retirees shows the same idea for a much longer one, and the volunteer resume page has the wording for unpaid roles. To write the summary line, see our resume summary examples, for the skills list our guide to resume skills, and if you are changing field as well, the career change resume.
What to leave out
- "Homemaker" as your entire identity. It is a title for the years, not for the candidate. Lead with the job you want.
- Chores without results. "Cooked and cleaned" tells a shortlister nothing. Budgets, schedules, quotes and people managed do.
- An apology or a long explanation. One line is enough, and you can say more if they ask.
- Skills you cannot use on day one. If you list Excel, be ready for the test.
- Personal details. Age, marital status and number of children stay off an American resume.
Frequently asked questions
How do you write a resume for homemakers with no work experience?
Open with a summary that names the job you want, then a skills list from the advert, then a household manager entry and any volunteer roles. Put recent courses next to education. Keep it to one page.
Should I put homemaker on my resume?
You can, as long as it sits under a title that describes the work, such as Household Manager or Family Career Break. If your industry is cautious about it, put the years in your summary and list the volunteer roles and courses instead.
What is the best resume format for a homemaker returning to work?
Reverse-chronological with a skills section at the top works for most returners. If you have little or no paid history, a skills-first layout with your volunteer work under it is more honest and easier to read.
Is a resume for housewives different from a homemaker resume?
No. Housewife, homemaker, stay-at-home parent and full-time carer are different names for the same gap, and the same layouts and wording work for all of them.
What skills do homemakers have that employers want?
Budgeting, scheduling, negotiating with suppliers, record keeping, caring for people and organizing volunteers. List only the ones you can back up with a task from the last few years.
Do I need a cover letter as well?
Yes, if the advert allows one. A short letter is the place to say in two sentences why you are coming back and what you can start with, so the resume can stay clean.
