Software Testing Resume: 6 Samples From Fresher to Lead

A software testing resume (also called a resume of software testing) shows what you tested, how you tested it, and what you caught before customers did. Below are six complete software testing resumes, from a fresher with a course project to a QA lead, checked in November 2026. Each one names the test types, the tools and at least one defect or release outcome. Find the closest sample, then put your own tools and numbers in.
The usual problem is a skills list that reads Selenium, Jira, SQL, Agile and a job history that says responsible for testing. A hiring manager cannot tell whether you wrote ten test cases or ten thousand. Put numbers and test types next to the tools.
Example 1: a fresher with no testing job yet
Start here if your testing so far is a course, a bootcamp or a personal project. Treat the project as the job: name the application, the number of test cases, and the bugs you found.

What the sources agree on
The U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET database describes the work in its opening line: "Develop and execute software tests to identify software problems and their causes." Both halves matter on a resume: the tests you ran, and the causes you traced.
O*NET also lists the task "Design test plans, scenarios, scripts, or procedures." If you wrote test plans, say how many and for what kind of release. Another listed task, "Update automated test scripts to ensure currency.", is the honest description of what automation work is most of the time: maintenance. Say so if it is true.
MIT's career office tells applicants in its resume guide: "Whenever possible, include how you performed tasks, not just what you did." For a tester, the how is the test type, the tool and the environment.
Harvard's career services describes the document in its resume guide as "A resume is a concise, informative summary of your abilities, education, and experience." Concise is the working word. Two pages is the ceiling for most testers, and one is fine below ten years.

Which skills to list, and where
- Test types. Regression, smoke, exploratory, API, performance, accessibility, cross-browser. Name only what you have done.
- Tools. Test management (TestRail, Zephyr), defect tracking (Jira), automation (Selenium, Playwright, Cypress) and API tools (Postman).
- Process. Agile, Scrum, test planning, release sign-off.
- Skills in context. Put each tool inside a bullet as well, as in the samples. A skill that appears only in a list looks borrowed.

What to leave out
- "Responsible for testing". Replace it with test types and counts.
- Tools you only watched a video about. Interviewers will ask.
- Defect counts with no context. 200 defects in a week might mean a good tester or a broken product. Pair counts with severity or outcome.
- Test automation claims with no framework. Name the framework and what it runs on.
- A photo, age or marital status. Not used on US resumes.
Frequently asked questions
How do you write a resume for software testing?
Start with a two-line summary naming your test types, add a skills list, then write job bullets with the tool, the volume and the outcome. Add a project section if you are a fresher.
What skills should a software tester put on a resume?
Test case design, regression, exploratory and API testing, a defect tracker, a test management tool, and one automation tool if you have used it. Match the list to the posting.
Can a fresher write a software testing resume with no experience?
Yes. Use an internship, a course project or a personal app. State the number of test cases and the bugs found, as in the first sample.
Should a manual tester list automation skills?
Only if you have used them. Basic Selenium or Playwright exposure can sit in skills, but do not claim a framework you cannot explain.
How long should a software testing resume be?
One page for fresher and early career, up to two pages for senior testers and leads.
