What actually gets this resume read

How to write a senior graphic designer resume

At the senior level the portfolio stops being the whole argument. A creative director hiring a senior graphic designer already assumes the craft is there, because you would not have reached the interview list otherwise. What he is reading the resume for is scope: how many brands you have owned, how many channels you carried, what other designers were able to build from your output, and whether you can stand in a room with people outside design and win an argument about a route.

That shifts what belongs on the page. A senior resume that lists deliverables reads like a mid level resume with more years attached. The entries that move a file forward are the ones about systems, governance and other people: the guideline document, the component library, the review flow, the designers you brought through a promotion cycle, the vendor or printer relationship you managed.

This guide covers how to lead with scope rather than output, how to write system and mentoring bullets that a director can verify, what operational numbers belong on a design resume, and the questions senior designers ask when they are aiming at an art director or design lead title next.

Format: two pages is fine, but the first half page must carry the scope

Two pages is normal after eight or nine years and no longer reads as padding. What matters is the first half of page one, which should establish brands owned, channels covered, team size influenced and the two or three projects you want to be asked about. Anything below that is supporting evidence.

Keep the layout restrained. A senior resume set in one family with a clear hierarchy and disciplined spacing signals more taste than a designed artifact with a color field behind the header. Save the expressive work for the portfolio, where it is judged in context.

Summary: brands, channels, team and the systems you left behind

Four lines. Name the sectors you have worked in, the scale of the brands you owned, the channels you covered from print through packaging and digital, and whether you mentor. Then one system you built that outlived the project, because that is the difference between a senior designer and a fast mid level one.

Avoid the language of aspiration. A senior summary that asks for an opportunity to grow inverts the relationship. The reader is trying to work out what you would take off his plate, so write the summary from that side of the table.

Experience: ownership, systems and the people you raised

Lead each role with a scope line: what the company does, how many brands or accounts you carried, and who you worked through. Then build bullets on the four senior arguments. Ownership, meaning a project you led end to end with the schedule attached. Systems, meaning the guidelines, libraries or templates other people now work from. Operations, meaning approval rounds, production time or asset reuse that improved because you changed a process. And people, meaning critique, mentoring and hiring.

A rebrand is the classic senior entry and it is usually written badly. Give the scale of the estate it touched, the components you delivered from mark through packaging and environmental application, and the schedule you held. A rebrand delivered across a large store estate inside a nine month schedule is a project a director can picture; a full brand refresh is not.

Art direction deserves its own bullet if you have done it. Shot lists, styling notes, retouching direction and being on set are a different discipline from designing the layout afterward, and they are the natural bridge to an art director title.

Systems and governance: the section that proves the level

Describe what you built for other people to use. A guideline document with a page count, a component library with the teams that adopted it, a template set with export presets standardized across a studio, and an asset review flow with the approval rounds it removed. Each of those is verifiable and each one says you think past your own screen.

Governance also means saying no well. Being the person who holds a brand consistent across agencies, regions and internal teams is a large part of a senior role, and one bullet describing how you kept a system intact under pressure is worth more than another list of executions.

Numbers that belong on a design resume

Design resumes are shy about figures, and they should not be at this level. Approval rounds, campaign volume, store or location counts, guideline page counts, team size, agencies coordinated and production turnaround are all countable and none of them reduce the work to a metric.

Attach the mechanism to each number, exactly as an engineer would. Approval rounds that fell from five to two because you introduced a single stage review with named decision makers is a story a director can repeat to his own boss, which is how a resume travels.

Senior Graphic Designer resume summary examples

Newly senior

Graphic designer with six years across agency and in house work, recently taking senior ownership of two retained retail accounts. Runs campaign concepts from brief through production, sets the type and layout system for each account, and gives weekly critique to two junior designers.

Nine years in

Senior graphic designer with nine years across agency and in house teams, leading brand systems for retail and health clients. Delivered a full rebrand for a chain of 120 stores, then wrote the guideline document and component library that two agencies and four internal designers now work from.

Design lead

Design lead with fourteen years owning visual identity across a portfolio of brands, responsible for the system, the review gate and the designers who work inside it. Art directs photography, manages printer and production partners, and presents creative rationale directly to executives outside the design function.

Work experience bullets: before and after

Before: Led a rebrand for a retail company.

After: Led the rebrand of a 120 store retail chain, delivering the mark, type system, packaging and in store signage inside a nine month schedule across three regional rollouts.

Estate size, the components delivered and the schedule turn a headline project into something a director can scope.

Before: Wrote brand guidelines for the company.

After: Wrote a 60 page brand guideline and built a matching component library that two external agencies and four internal designers now produce from without further direction.

Adoption by named groups is the proof that the system worked, which is the whole point of a senior deliverable.

Before: Improved the design approval process.

After: Rebuilt the asset review flow around a single consolidated round with named decision makers, cutting average approvals on seasonal campaigns from five rounds to two.

The mechanism and the before and after make an operational win checkable rather than asserted.

Before: Mentored junior designers on the team.

After: Mentored three designers through promotion cycles with weekly critique, a shared portfolio review and briefs deliberately scoped a level above their current work.

Naming the method and the outcome shows deliberate development rather than casual availability for questions.

Before: Art directed a photo shoot.

After: Art directed two product photography shoots including shot lists, styling notes, on set direction and retouching briefs, delivering a library that supplied a full season of campaign work.

The specific direction tasks and the reuse of the output show art direction rather than attendance.

Mistakes that cost senior graphic designer candidates the interview

Senior Graphic Designer resume questions

How do I show seniority when my portfolio looks similar to a mid level one?

Shift the argument off the executions and onto the system around them. Guidelines other teams work from, review processes you changed, designers you developed and vendors you managed are the things a mid level portfolio cannot show, and they are what the title is actually paying for.

Should a senior graphic designer resume be two pages?

Two pages is acceptable and often necessary after eight or nine years, provided the first half page carries the scope. If the second page is only more of the same client names, cut it and let the portfolio carry that volume instead.

How do I position myself for an art director role?

Make direction visible: shot lists, on set work, retouching briefs, concept ownership and the critique you give other designers. Then use the summary to say plainly that you are moving toward direction, so the reader does not have to infer your intent.

Do I need numbers on a design resume?

They help more than most designers expect, because they let a hiring manager repeat your achievement to someone else. Use countable operational facts such as approval rounds, locations, team size or guideline scope, and always attach the change you made that moved them.

What if most of my recent work is managing rather than making?

Say so and keep one or two executions you personally designed on the page. A design lead who has stopped making entirely is a harder hire for a studio role, so showing that you still take the most demanding pieces yourself keeps both doors open.
