Bank Teller Job Description for a Resume: 7 Examples

A bank teller job description for your resume is four to six bullets under each teller job that say how many transactions you handled, how your drawer balanced and what you did beyond the window: referrals, fraud checks, vault work or training. The constraint is that a branch manager already knows what a teller does, so the bullets only work when each duty carries your own volume, accuracy or result. The federal occupation database O*NET sums up the job in one line: "Receive and pay out money. Keep records of money and negotiable instruments involved in a financial institution's various transactions." Below are seven complete examples, checked in October 2026, from a first teller job to a head teller. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

The first example is the one most people need: a teller with a couple of years at a retail bank branch, applying to another bank or a credit union.

Use the official duty wording, then add your number

Most teller postings are written from the same duty list. The O*NET profile for tellers lists 28 tasks, and the first three are "Balance currency, coin, and checks in cash drawers at ends of shifts and calculate daily transactions, using computers, calculators, or adding machines", "Receive checks and cash for deposit, verify amounts, and check accuracy of deposit slips" and "Cash checks and pay out money after verifying that signatures are correct, that written and numerical amounts agree, and that accounts have sufficient funds."

Those lines tell you which words the screening software and the manager expect to see: balance, verify, deposit, cash checks, signatures. They do not tell anyone how good you were. Your resume adds the size and the result of each duty. *Balanced cash drawer* is the job description. *Balanced a drawer every shift with no differences in twelve months* is your job description.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics handbook page on tellers covers the same ground and is worth reading if you are new to banking and want the vocabulary before an interview.

Three numbers do most of the work on a teller resume:

If your branch did not track one of these, leave it out rather than estimating it in a way you cannot explain at the interview.

Each block below is a complete job entry you can adapt. The employers and figures are invented; replace them with your own.

Complete Entry level: first teller job after retail cashier work example, 101 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Entry level: first teller job after retail cashier work (101 words)

Teller Trainee, Lakeshore Community Bank, Erie PA. March 2026 to present

- Completed the bank's six week teller training and was cleared to work a full drawer on my own in the fourth week. - Handle 60 to 80 transactions a day: deposits, withdrawals, transfers and check cashing. - Balance my drawer at the end of each shift and record any difference on the branch log. - Answer branch phone calls about hours, balances and card replacement, and pass loan questions to the personal banker. - Previous cashier experience at a grocery store, handling cash and card payments for two years.

The entry level block leans on training and the cash handling you already had, because a branch hires first tellers for accuracy they can trust from day one.

Complete Mid level: credit union member service teller example, 103 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Mid level: credit union member service teller (103 words)

Member Service Teller, Riverbend Federal Credit Union, Spokane WA. 2023 to present

- Serve 70 to 100 members a day at the teller line and the drive through window. - Process share deposits, loan payments, transfers and money orders, and order debit cards and checks for members. - Explain account options to members and refer them to loan officers for auto loans and home equity lines. - Keep a balanced drawer every shift and take part in quarterly surprise cash counts with no exceptions found. - Help members set up online banking at the counter, which cut repeat visits for simple balance questions.

Credit unions say members, not customers, and many postings call the role member service representative. Use their word in your job title line if it was your title.

Complete Mid level: teller at a busy downtown branch with commercial deposits example, 106 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Mid level: teller at a busy downtown branch with commercial deposits (106 words)

- Split each day between the teller line and a desk, handling transactions and opening checking and savings accounts. - Open eight to twelve new accounts a month and set up online banking and direct deposit for each customer. - Process 50 to 70 teller transactions on line days and balance my drawer every shift. - Hold a notary commission and notarize documents for branch customers. - Cross trained two tellers on account opening so the branch could cover lunch breaks at the desk.

A universal banker or teller with account opening duties should put the sales and service work first, because that is the part a bank pays more for.

Complete Senior level: head teller overseeing a teller line example, 111 words, laid out as it would sit in the application form

Senior level: head teller overseeing a teller line (111 words)

Head Teller, Cedar Valley Bank, Cedar Rapids IA. 2021 to present

For a career change, write the job you had in the language of the job you want. Cash drawer, deposit, identification check and dispute are all teller words.

Bank teller duties for a resume: the short list

If you only need the duty phrases, start from these and add your own number to each:

Teller skills belong in their own short section too: cash handling, attention to detail, customer service, core banking software, check scanners, currency counters and any language you speak at the window. Our guide to customer service skills for a resume covers how to show the service side without empty adjectives.

How to turn a duty into a strong bullet

Start each bullet with a verb, then the duty, then the size or the result. Our resume action verbs list has alternatives if every line starts with "processed."

The same pattern works for any front line job; the receptionist job descriptions for a resume show it applied to an office front desk. When your job description is ready, the bank teller resume example shows where it sits on a full page, the bank teller cover letter shows how to lead with one bullet in a letter, and the bank teller interview questions show how to tell the story behind your numbers.

At the top of the resume, a short summary does the introducing. CareerOneStop, the Department of Labor's career site, says a summary "highlights your top skills and accomplishments related to the job, using keywords from the job posting." For a teller, that means your years at the window, your balancing record and one result.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good job description for a bank teller on a resume?

Four to six bullets that cover transaction volume, drawer balancing, verification of checks and identification, referrals and any vault or training work. Each bullet should carry a number or a result, such as transactions a day or months without a drawer difference.

How do I describe bank teller duties on a resume?

Use the bank's own duty words, such as process, balance, verify and refer, then add your volume and accuracy. Put the duties that match the posting first; if the job stresses sales, lead with referrals and accounts opened.

What skills should a bank teller put on a resume?

Cash handling, accuracy, customer service, fraud awareness, core banking software, check scanners and currency counters, plus any languages you use with customers. List them in a short skills section and prove the important ones in your bullets.

How do I write a bank teller resume with no banking experience?

Lead with any job where you handled cash and balanced a drawer, such as retail, hospitality or food service. Describe it in teller language: cash drawer, deposit, identification check, dispute. Add any training, such as a bank's teller program or a cash handling course.

What is the difference between a teller and a head teller job description?

A teller job description is about your own drawer and your own customers. A head teller description adds supervision, scheduling, vault control, override approvals, training and audit results. If you covered for a head teller, list those duties under your teller job with how often you covered.
