What actually gets this resume read
- Say whether you carry a personal number as well as the team number, because that difference defines the role.
- Quantify the team you run: reps, sales development headcount, and how the segments or territories are split.
- Show the systems you built, such as a playbook, stage exit criteria, or an onboarding plan with a ramp figure.
- Give a year-over-year bookings figure next to the plan, not just a growth number with no baseline.
- Name the CRM and the reporting cadence, since a founder wants to know how the forecast will reach them.
- Keep a short seller section for your individual-contributor years so your credibility with the team is visible.
How to write a head of sales resume
Head of Sales is the title companies use when they need one person to both build the sales function and personally close the deals that matter. That double duty is the thing your resume has to prove. A founder reading it wants to know whether you can write the playbook and still get on a call with their largest prospect on Friday.
The role sits between sales manager and VP of Sales, and the ambiguity is real: at a company of thirty people it may mean six reps and a spreadsheet, and at a company of four hundred it may mean three managers and a formal forecast. Your resume has to remove that ambiguity in the first six lines, or the reader will guess wrong.
This guide sets out the format, how to state team scope and personal quota together, what a founder actually checks, three summaries covering the route into the job, a head of sales resume written out in full, before-and-after bullets, and the questions that come up when a top seller writes their first leadership resume.
Format: one or two pages, with a scope line under every title
One page works if you have under eight years of experience, two pages once you have led more than one team. Reverse chronological in both cases. Under each leadership title, put a single scope line: team size and split, the number you owned, the segment, the average deal size and whether you carried a personal quota.
Keep your individual selling years on the page but compress them. Two lines that show you finished above target for three consecutive years is enough to establish credibility with a team you would inherit, and no more space than that is needed.
- Header: name, city, phone, email, professional profile link.
- Section order: summary, leadership experience, individual contributor record, tools, education.
- Scope line format: reps and roles, annual number, segment, average deal size, personal quota if any.
Summary: team, number, motion, and whether you still sell
Three or four lines. Say how many people you lead and in what roles, the annual number, the sales motion, and whether you carry a personal quota alongside the team. That last point changes the whole reading of the resume for a founder-led company where the head of sales is still expected to close.
Add the motion in plain terms: outbound-led, inbound from content, partner-sourced, land and expand, or field sales into named accounts. A candidate whose success came from inbound volume is a genuinely different hire from one who built an outbound engine, and pretending otherwise wastes everyone's time.
Experience: what you built, not only what you hit
The bullets that get interviews at this level describe artifacts. A documented playbook with stage exit criteria. A 30-60-90 onboarding plan. A discovery framework. A weekly forecast call with a defined format. Each of these is a thing you made that survived you, and each can carry a number: ramp time, attainment, cycle length, win rate.
Balance the building bullets with performance bullets. Bookings against plan with the previous year as a baseline, the share of the team at quota, and any large logo you personally closed. A head of sales who only lists process work reads as an operator who cannot sell, which is the exact fear a founder has.
Include the recruiting story. At this level you are usually hiring the team you will lead, so name the number of sellers hired, where you sourced them, and the ramp result. Sourcing detail is worth including because a company with no recruiting function is buying your network as much as your management.
- Bookings against plan, with last year as the stated baseline.
- Quota attainment across the team, expressed as how many of how many.
- Ramp time from start date to first closed deal, before and after your onboarding plan.
- One or two named deal wins by size and segment, without naming a confidential customer.
Tools and process: keep it short and specific
A short block naming the CRM, the sales engagement platform, the call recording tool, the enrichment source and the reporting layer is enough. What matters is that you name the ones you configured rather than the ones you tolerated. Writing that you rebuilt the opportunity stages and required fields in HubSpot says more than a list of twelve logos.
If you introduced a qualification framework, name it and say what changed. Forecast accuracy, cycle length or the share of opportunities that die in the first stage are all fair measures of whether the framework was adopted or ignored.
Keywords a founder or recruiter searches for
Mirror the language of the companies you want. B2B, mid-market, enterprise, SMB, annual recurring revenue, average contract value, sales cycle, outbound, sales development, expansion, renewals, sales playbook, forecast, quota, pipeline coverage. Put these in the summary and in the bullets, once each, in a sentence that means something.
Also name your industry vocabulary. Selling into utilities, clinics, logistics operators or schools is a distinct skill, and a hiring company in that field filters for it before anything else.
Head of sales resume example, start to finish
A head of sales resume has to show the team and the personal number side by side, so the sample below puts a scope line under every leadership title and keeps the selling years to two lines. The person and companies are invented. It is written for a first head of sales hire at a company that still expects the leader to close.
- Header: Marcus Delaney, Head of Sales. City, phone, email, professional profile link.
- Summary: Head of sales for a B2B field service software company selling to utilities and facilities operators, mid-market and enterprise. Leads eight people across account executives and sales development, owns the annual new business number, and still carries a personal quota on the largest accounts.
- Current role, Head of Sales, Corran Systems. Scope: six account executives, two sales development reps, mid-market and enterprise, field sales into named accounts, personal quota on top accounts.
- Wrote the first sales playbook with stage exit criteria and a discovery framework; the forecast call now runs weekly on one shared format.
- Hired five of the eight sellers on the team, mostly from former colleagues and customer referrals; four reached their first closed deal inside the first quarter.
- Personally closed the largest contract in company history, a regional utility, with the founder as executive sponsor.
- Previous role, Senior Account Executive, Halbrook Software, compressed: finished above target three years running selling scheduling software to facilities teams.
- Tools: HubSpot, rebuilt opportunity stages and required fields; Gong; Outreach. Education: Bachelor of Science, business.
Head of Sales resume summary examples
Top seller moving into leadership
Enterprise account executive with five years above target, most recently 141% of a 1.8M quota in 2024, now leading three sellers as a player-coach. Built the team's discovery framework and onboarding checklist. Ready for a first head of sales role at a company under thirty people.
Leading a team of ten
Head of Sales running ten people across new business, expansion and a two-person sales development pod against a 7M plan. Wrote the first documented playbook with stage exit criteria, cut new-hire ramp from seven months to four, and grew bookings 41% year over year.
Head of Sales with managers reporting in
Head of Sales for a mid-market software business, leading 24 people through two managers against a 19M plan. Rebuilt territories, introduced a deal desk that reduced average discount by six points, and kept 17 of 24 sellers at or above quota through a repricing year.
Work experience bullets: before and after
Before: Created a sales process for the team.
After: Wrote the company's first sales playbook, with stage exit criteria, a discovery question set and objection responses by persona, and cut new-hire ramp from seven months to four.
Naming what is inside the playbook and the ramp result shows the process was adopted, not just written.
Before: Hit and exceeded team targets.
After: Delivered 118% of a 7M plan in a year when company-wide revenue finished under target, with 8 of 10 sellers at or above their individual quota.
Context and the attainment distribution show the result came from the team rather than one outsized deal.
Before: Recruited new sales staff.
After: Hired nine sellers in fourteen months, six of them sourced directly through my own network, and had eight producing at plan within two quarters.
Sourcing and productivity turn a recruiting count into evidence that the hires were the right ones.
Before: Used the CRM to track pipeline.
After: Rebuilt opportunity stages and required fields in HubSpot, then enforced a weekly pipeline review, which brought forecast variance from over 25% down to 8%.
Configuring the system and enforcing a cadence is management work; using a CRM is not.
Before: Closed several large deals personally.
After: Carried a personal quota alongside the team and closed four contracts above 250K, including the largest deal in company history at the time.
A founder hiring a player-coach needs to see the personal number, the deal sizes and that you still sell.

Mistakes that cost head of sales candidates the interview
- Leaving out whether you carry a personal quota, which is the first thing a founder-led company wants to know.
- Describing process work with no revenue result attached, which reads as administration rather than sales leadership.
- Deleting the individual contributor years entirely, so the team you would inherit has no reason to respect the number you set.
- Using growth percentages with no baseline, when a jump from a small starting point is a different story from a large one.
- Listing every tool the company used rather than the systems you configured and enforced.
- Applying to companies with a different sales motion without changing the summary, so an inbound record is read against an outbound job.
Head of Sales resume questions
Is Head of Sales a step below VP of Sales?
Not reliably. Many smaller companies use Head of Sales for the most senior sales role in the business, while larger ones place it under a VP. State your team size, your number and your reporting line so the reader sizes the role correctly instead of guessing from the title.
Should I keep my account executive results on the resume?
Yes, compressed to two or three lines. Attainment across your selling years establishes that you can do the job you are asking others to do. Drop the detail once you have led teams for more than about five years and the leadership record speaks for itself.
How do I show results if the company was very early and the numbers were small?
Use the baseline and the multiple rather than the absolute figure, and add the customer count. Going from four customers to thirty-one in eighteen months while writing the first playbook is a strong story even when the revenue is modest.
What do founders look for in a head of sales resume?
Evidence you have built a repeatable motion at their stage, that you can still close, and that people you hired succeeded. They also look for industry familiarity, because a head of sales who already knows the buyer starts producing months earlier.
What should a head of sales resume example include?
A scope line under every leadership title with team size, the number owned, segment and whether you carry a personal quota. Then building bullets such as the playbook, hiring and forecast, performance against plan, and one large deal you closed. Name the product category and buyer rather than the product.
