How to write a packaging engineer resume
Packaging engineering is judged on a trade nobody escapes: protect the product, cost less, use less material, and run on the line at speed. A packaging engineer resume that talks about design without touching damage rate, cost per unit or line efficiency has left out the part the hiring manager is measured on.
Two readers matter. A recruiter screens for the material world you know, whether corrugated, folding carton, flexible film, rigid plastic or glass, and for transit testing experience. A packaging development manager reads for whether you have qualified components on a real production line rather than in a lab.
This guide covers the structure that works for packaging development resumes, three summaries across career stages, before and after bullets from structural and line trial work, and the questions engineers ask when sustainability targets collide with protection requirements.
Format: materials, categories, and the plants you have worked in
Give each job a scope line with the product categories, the packaging levels you owned from primary through pallet, and the plants or copackers you worked with. Then bullets for design, testing, qualification and cost. That order matches how a packaging project actually runs, so a manager reads it without effort.
One page is enough for most packaging engineers. Keep a compact skills block near the top because the materials vocabulary is what a recruiter matches on, and the material list is long.
- Header: name, city and state, phone, email, and a note on travel availability to plants and copackers.
- Sections: summary, materials and testing skills, experience by employer, education, certifications.
- Name your design software explicitly, since structural work is done in a specific package rather than a generic one.
Summary: levels owned, categories, and the metric you moved
Say which packaging levels you own. Primary packaging touching the product, secondary cases and cartons, and tertiary pallet and unit load design are different skill sets, and many postings want one of them specifically.
Then give one number you moved. Cases per pallet, grams of resin per bottle, damage claims after launch, or line efficiency during qualification. Packaging managers think in those terms all day, and a summary that speaks the same language gets read to the end.
Structural design and the specification package
Structural work is only half of the deliverable. The other half is the specification: board grade, flute, basis weight, dimensions, tolerances, print requirements and the dieline that goes to the converter. Say that you maintained the component specification library, because whoever holds that library holds the quality of the whole portfolio.
Name your design tools and what you produced in them. Dielines and folding carton development in a structural design package, three dimensional models for fitment studies, and drawing sets released to suppliers are all concrete outputs that separate an engineer from a coordinator.
Transit testing and qualification
Name the transit protocols. The ISTA series and distribution cycle standards define what your packages had to survive, and stating which one you ran tells a reader whether you tested for parcel, palletized freight or small load handling.
Qualification happens on a line, not in a lab. Say how many trials you ran, on which equipment, and what failed the first time. Seal integrity on a form fill seal machine, film tracking on a shrink tunnel, or case erector jams are the real content of a packaging qualification, and naming them proves you were there.
Close the loop with the field result. Components launched with no damage claims, or a damage rate that fell after a redesign, is the outcome the whole exercise exists to produce.
Cost, cube and sustainability
Cost per unit, material use and cube utilization are the three levers packaging controls directly. Raising cases per pallet changes freight cost for every load after it, and that is a bullet a supply chain director will remember. Give the before and after counts.
Handle sustainability precisely. Say what changed and what property you held: a resin reduction with top load and drop performance maintained, a structure swapped for a recyclable one, or a component removed entirely. Vague environmental language without an engineering constraint reads as marketing copy in a technical file.

What packaging materials should I emphasize on my resume?
The two or three you have real depth in, named specifically: corrugated, folding carton, flexible film, rigid plastic or glass. A long undifferentiated substrate list makes a hiring manager assume surface exposure, while depth in a couple of families reads as someone who can specify without help.
How important is transit testing experience?
It is central, because it is the evidence a package will survive distribution. Name the protocols you ran, whether an ISTA series test or a distribution cycle standard, and say whether you ran them in house or managed an external laboratory. Both are valuable, and they are different jobs.
How do I show sustainability work credibly?
Attach every change to a measured property you protected. A resin reduction that held top load, a structure change that kept the pack recyclable in a real stream, or a component removal that passed transit testing. The constraint is what makes the claim engineering rather than a statement of intent.
Do I need a packaging degree to work as a packaging engineer?
A packaging science degree is common but not required. Mechanical, industrial and materials graduates move into the function regularly.
