Director Resume Format: 6 Layouts With Full Examples

The right format for a director resume is reverse chronological, one clean column, a short headline and summary at the top, then each role opened with a line on the scope you ran, followed by results with numbers. Two pages is normal at this level. Below are six complete director resumes in six situations, checked in November 2026, then the order of sections, the length rules and what to cut.

Most director resumes fail in the same way: the person has run a department for a decade and the resume reads like a list of meetings they attended. A director is paid for scope and results. Put both where they cannot be missed.

Example 1: a first director role, reverse chronological

You were promoted from manager to director, or you are applying for your first director title. Show the promotion, the team you lead now and one result that changed the numbers.

What the sources say about length and structure

Executive resumes are longer than entry-level ones, but only by one page. Smith College's alumnae guide to executive-level resumes says: "Two pages is a standard length for an executive resume, but if you are a superstar, you can go to a third page." Augsburg University's career centre, in its executive resume guide, is firmer: "We recommend not going over two pages and, if you only have a little bit of information spilling onto the second page, it's better to edit and shorten it back down to one." It also moves education to the bottom once you have years of experience.

On content, the Smith guide says: "Your resume should read more like a performance evaluation than a task list or job description." The Michigan Ross executive toolkit, in its resume writing guide, gives the structure for each role: "We recommend starting with a brief description of the company, job scope, and key challenges, followed by bullet points that describe specific accomplishments."

That last line is the format. Scope first, then results. Every example below follows it.

What to cut

Frequently asked questions

What is the best format for a director resume?

Reverse chronological, one column, with a headline and summary at the top and scope plus results for each role.

How long should a director resume be?

Two pages. One page is fine for a short career, and a third page is for rare cases.

Should a director resume have a summary or an objective?

A summary. State your title, the scale you work at and your strongest result in three or four lines.

Where does education go on a director resume?

At the bottom, once you have several years of experience.

Do I list every job on a director resume?

No. Detail the last 10 to 15 years and list earlier titles in one line each.

Should I include a competencies section?

It helps when you are changing industries or when the posting lists many skills. Otherwise skip it and let the bullets do the work.
