PCU Nurse Resume: 6 Progressive Care Examples to Copy

A PCU nurse resume has one job: prove you can handle stepdown acuity. That means patient ratio, the drips you titrate, the monitoring you run, and how often you catch a patient sliding toward the ICU before anyone else does. Below are six complete progressive care nurse resumes, one for each common starting point: new graduate, med-surg transfer, experienced PCU RN, cardiac stepdown with PCCN, charge nurse and travel nurse. Copy the one closest to you and swap in your own numbers.
Every progressive care nurse resume promises quality patient care. So does the hospital's billboard on the interstate. The resume that gets the interview says 1:3, heparin and diltiazem drips, BiPAP, and two rapid responses called early.
Example 1: new graduate PCU nurse
New grads land in the PCU through residency programs. Your clinical rotations and capstone are the experience section until you have a job, so give them unit names and patient loads.

Entry level: New graduate RN, PCU residency applicant (156 words)

What the PCU actually covers
The certifying body for progressive care, AACN, describes who its PCCN credential is for on its PCCN eligibility page: "Nurses interested in this certification pathway may work in areas such as intermediate care, direct observation, stepdown, telemetry, transitional care or emergency departments." That list is your keyword list. If the job post says stepdown and your unit called itself intermediate care, use both words once.
The core nursing tasks are the same as on any unit. O*NET's registered nurse task list includes "Monitor, record, and report symptoms or changes in patients' conditions." On a PCU that sentence is the whole job, so make it specific: what you monitored, how often, and what you reported.
Example 2: med-surg nurse moving to PCU
The most common route into progressive care is from med-surg or telemetry. Lead with the parts of your current job that already look like stepdown.

License and certification lines
Your RN license goes in the header with the state and, if you have one, multistate status. The Nurse Licensure Compact explains that "Nurses who live in a compact state can apply for a multistate license if they meet the licensure requirements." New graduates who have not tested yet should write the scheduled NCLEX date instead of a license; the NCSBN NCLEX page covers registration and exam day.
PCCN is the specialty credential for progressive care. AACN's page states that "A current, unencumbered U.S. RN or APRN license is required," and that the two-year route means you "Practice as an RN or APRN for 1,750 hours in direct care of acutely ill adult patients during the previous two years, with 875 of those hours accrued in the most recent year preceding application." If you are not there yet, leave PCCN off and list it as in progress only when your exam is booked. Our guide on certifications for jobs shows the formatting, and how to put CPR certification on a resume covers BLS and ACLS.
How to write your own PCU lines
- State the ratio. Your usual patient load tells a manager what acuity you have worked.
- Name the drips and devices. Heparin, diltiazem, insulin, nitroglycerin, BiPAP, high-flow, sheaths, pacing wires. Only the ones you actually manage.
- Count the catches. Rapid responses called, ICU transfers avoided, sepsis screens that led to early treatment.
- Show the teaching. Preceptor, superuser, skills fair, rhythm class.
- Start with a verb. Our resume action verbs list has more than responsible for.

Frequently asked questions
What should a PCU nurse put on a resume?
Your RN license and state, PCCN if you hold it, BLS and ACLS, then each job with unit size, ratio, patient types, drips and devices, and one or two numbers such as rapid responses called or nurses precepted.
Is PCU the same as stepdown on a resume?
Hospitals use progressive care, stepdown and intermediate care for similar units. Use the name your unit used, and add the job post's term once in your summary.
Can a new grad apply to a PCU?
Yes, usually through a nurse residency. Put your PCU or telemetry capstone first, with patient load and the monitoring and drips you handled under supervision.
Do I need PCCN to get a PCU job?
Some PCU job posts list it as preferred rather than required, and AACN sets clinical hour minimums before you can sit the exam. List it only once you hold it, or as scheduled when the exam is booked.
How long should a progressive care nurse resume be?
One page for new grads and nurses with a few years on one unit. Two pages for charge, travel or long careers with several units and contracts.
