What actually gets this resume read
- Give the basin, the well type and the depth for every program, because recruiters screen on formation experience.
- Report spud to rig release days and cost per foot, the two numbers a drilling manager checks first.
- Name your well control certification and its expiry date, since an expired card removes you from the list.
- Say whether you sat on the rig or worked from town, and how many wells you covered in each mode.
- List software by product name: WELLPLAN, Compass, OpenWells and the daily reporting system you used.
- Include problem wells you recovered, such as stuck pipe or lost circulation, and the decision you made.
How to write a drilling engineer resume
Drilling engineer resumes are screened by people who have run rigs. They read for three things in order: what you drilled, how fast and how cheaply it went, and whether you were the person making the call or the person writing the report. A list of duties that could describe any office engineer in the drilling group loses to a resume that names the basin, the well count, the lateral length and the spud to rig release average.
The other filter is operational credibility. Well control certification with a live expiry date, days on the rig floor, and at least one problem well you recovered are what separate a drilling engineer from a drilling analyst. Operators are hiring someone who will be woken at three in the morning to decide whether to circulate or to trip, so the resume has to show that decisions have been made under pressure.
What follows is the section order used across operators and service companies, three summaries covering a new engineer through a senior, before and after bullets from well planning and rig operations, and answers to the questions engineers ask when they move between land and offshore or between operators and service work.
Format: one page until you have a well list worth two
Reverse chronological, plain single column. Drilling groups hire quickly and the resume often lands as an email attachment in front of a drilling manager who is between calls. Anything that needs interpretation gets skipped.
Certifications sit directly under the header, not at the bottom. Well control cards expire, and a manager checking whether you can be sent to a rig next month wants the issuing body and the expiry visible in the first few lines.

- Service company engineers add a line naming the operators they supported.
Summary: basin, well type, count, and where you sat
Name the plays you have drilled, the well profile, and roughly how many wells you have delivered. Then say whether you worked from town, sat wellsite, or split the two. Those facts decide whether a manager reads the rest, because a shale factory drilling program and a deepwater exploration well demand different engineers.
Include one performance number in the summary if you have a strong one. Days per ten thousand feet, spud to rig release average, or cost per foot trend all translate immediately. A generic claim about improving drilling efficiency does not.
Experience: programs written, wells delivered, problems solved
Start each job with the operating environment: land or offshore, rig types and specifications, hole sizes, target depths and the formations. Then write bullets in three groups. First the design work: casing and cement programs, mud programs, bit and bottom hole assembly selection, hydraulics, torque and drag, wellbore stability. Second the delivery: wells drilled, days, cost against AFE. Third the trouble: the stuck pipe, the lost circulation zone, the shallow gas, the kick, and what you did.
Do not bury the trouble bullets. A drilling manager reads them first because they show judgment under real conditions, and every well eventually turns into a trouble well. Give the situation, the decision and the outcome in rig days or dollars saved.
If you have supervised, say what you supervised. Directional and mud vendors, day rate negotiation, the daily drilling call, the wellsite handover, the completions turnover. Those responsibilities are what promote an engineer to senior.
Technical skills and software the screener searches
Recruiters filter on product names. WELLPLAN for torque and drag, hydraulics and swab and surge. Compass or a similar package for well path design. OpenWells, WellView or the operator daily reporting system. Casing design software and any pore pressure or geomechanics tool you have used in anger.
Alongside the tools, list the engineering disciplines by their standard names: casing and tubing design, cement slurry design, drilling fluid selection, hole cleaning, hydraulics optimization, well control, kick tolerance, wellbore stability and directional drilling. Postings are written from that vocabulary and a parser will only match what is spelled the same way.
Education, licensure and papers
A petroleum engineering degree is the common route, but mechanical and chemical degrees are widely accepted when the well experience is there. Put the degree at the bottom once you have three years behind you.
A PE license carries less weight in drilling than in civil disciplines, so list it if you hold it but do not lead with it. Technical papers presented through a professional society are worth a short line, placed after experience, because they signal that you can explain a design decision to a room.

Drilling Engineer resume questions
How many wells should I list on a drilling engineer resume?
Summarize rather than list. Give the total count, the profile and the basin in one line per job, then use bullets for the design work and the problem wells. A well by well table is unreadable once you pass twenty wells.
Does a drilling engineer need a well control certificate to apply?
Most operator and service postings require a current IWCF or IADC WellSharp card before you can be assigned to a rig. Apply with an expired card if you have one, and state that renewal is booked, rather than leaving the line out entirely.
How do I move from a service company to an operator?
Reframe your bullets around well outcomes instead of product delivery. Operators want to see that you influenced the program: bottom hole assembly design, hydraulics, hole cleaning decisions and troubleshooting, not the number of tools you ran.
Should I include offshore experience if it was only a short assignment?
Yes, and give the water depth, the rig type and the section you covered. Offshore exposure is rare enough that even a single development well changes how a manager reads the rest of your land experience.
What performance numbers matter most for a drilling engineer?
Spud to rig release days, days per ten thousand feet, cost per foot and AFE variance. Those four are compared directly against the reader own program, so quote them per job and say what changed to move them.
