Apple Pages Resume Template: 6 Examples Built for ATS

The best Apple Pages resume template is a word-processing template with one column, real text instead of text boxes, and standard headings, exported to Word or PDF before you upload it. The constraint is that most employers never open a .pages file, and many run your resume through an applicant tracking system that reads the text, not the design. Apple's Pages User Guide says Pages templates "are designed either for word processing or for page layout", and that choice decides whether your resume reads cleanly. Below are six complete resume examples, tagged by level, written to be typed straight into a Pages template, plus the export steps. Written by Mustafa Tarabya, who hired for his own company, read every application himself and now writes CVBooster's guides.

Pages opens with a template chooser full of flyers, posters and brochures. You are about to apply for a job, not announce a bake sale, and the two cannot share a layout.

Word processing or page layout: pick the right Pages template

Apple's guide to creating a document in Pages describes word-processing templates as "For documents that are primarily text, such as reports and letters." A resume is exactly that. Page layout templates place everything in movable boxes, which looks good on screen and often comes out of an applicant tracking system in the wrong order or not at all.

To check a template, open it, click the Document button in the toolbar and look at the Document Body checkbox. If it is selected, the template is set up for word processing. If not, choose another one or start from Blank.

Three more checks before you type:

Mid level: project coordinator with five years

Pages templates also pull from your Contacts card. Apple notes that "Pages templates are designed to use information from your My Card in Contacts." Check that the name, phone and email it fills in are the ones you want an employer to see.

At this level the template matters less than the bullets. Keep the same single-column layout and let the numbers carry the page.

Career changer: teacher to instructional designer

Career changers are often tempted by a page layout template with a sidebar for skills. Keep the skills in the body instead, so the tracking system reads them in order.

Graphic designer: when a design-heavy Pages template is tempting

Designers have the strongest case for a decorative template, and the strongest reason not to send one to a tracking system. Send the plain word-processing version through the application form, and the designed version as a PDF in your portfolio.

Entry level: high school student, part-time job

A Pages template works well for a first job, as long as the student replaces every line of placeholder text. Apple warns that "Some templates include placeholder text written in lorem ipsum (scrambled Latin)", and a stray line of Latin is the one thing a store manager will notice.

How to export a Pages resume to Word or PDF

Most job sites will not accept a .pages file. Before you apply, choose File, then Export To, and pick PDF or Word. Use PDF when the posting allows it and you want the layout locked, and Word when the application form asks for a .docx. Open the exported file once before you upload it, because a font Pages had and Word does not will quietly change your spacing.

If you want to reuse your layout, save it as your own template. Apple's page on creating a custom template in Pages explains: "Choose File > Save as Template", and the template then appears in "the My Templates category in the template chooser." For more detail on the formats themselves, see Microsoft Word resume templates and Google Docs resume templates, and check the layout rules in the ATS-friendly resume guide.

A pretty template is not a strategy. The first three lines of your summary decide whether anyone reads the rest, so tailor them to the job before you worry about fonts. You can test a finished file with the free ATS checker or browse our resume templates.

Frequently asked questions

Does Apple Pages have resume templates?

Yes. Open Pages, click New Document or choose File then New, and browse the template chooser. Pick a word-processing template with a single column, or start from Blank and add your own headings. Avoid page layout templates, because their text sits in boxes that applicant tracking systems can read out of order.

Is a Pages resume ATS friendly?

It can be, if you use a word-processing template, one column, plain headings and real text rather than text boxes, then export to Word or PDF. The tracking system never sees the .pages file. Test the exported file by copying its text into a plain note; if the order looks wrong there, it will look wrong to the system.

How do I convert a Pages resume to Word?

In Pages on a Mac, choose File, then Export To, then Word, and save the .docx file. Open it in Word or Google Docs to check that fonts, bullets and page breaks survived. If they did not, switch to a standard font such as Helvetica or Arial in Pages and export again.

Should I send a resume as a Pages file?

No. Most employers use Windows computers and applicant tracking systems that cannot open .pages files. Export to PDF when the posting allows it, or to Word when the form asks for a .docx. Name the file with your name and the role, for example Maya Thompson Marketing Coordinator Resume.

Can I use an Apple Pages resume template on iPhone or iPad?

Yes. Pages runs on iPhone and iPad, and a template you save on your Mac can be used there. Apple notes that a template saved to iCloud appears in the document manager on iPhone or iPad. Editing a full resume is easier on a Mac, but final checks and exports work on mobile too.
