How to write a new graduate nurse resume
New graduate nurse hiring runs on cohorts. A residency program opens, hundreds of files arrive in a two week window, and a recruiter sorts them on four things: license status, the specialty track you asked for, the hours behind you, and whether your capstone matches the unit. Nothing about that process rewards a beautifully written paragraph on your passion for helping people.
The second reader is the unit manager who will pay for your orientation. Twelve to twenty six weeks of preceptor time is expensive, so she reads for anything that shortens it: prior aide or technician work, familiarity with the charting system, a capstone on a similar unit, ACLS already in hand, comfort with IV starts.
This guide shows how to put license and track at the top where the sort happens, how to write a capstone so it reads as experience, three summaries at different stages of the new graduate window, and the bullet rewrites that turn student tasks into hireable evidence. Format: one page, license at the top, track named
One page, single column, reverse chronological. Put license status in the header line or the first line of the summary: registered nurse licensed in your state, or graduate nurse with the exam scheduled and the month. A recruiter cannot place you in a cohort without it, and a file that hides it goes to the bottom of the pile.
Name the track you are applying for in the summary. Residency postings are split into critical care, emergency, perioperative, maternal child, medical-surgical and oncology cohorts. A resume that says acute care in general forces the recruiter to guess, and guessing is what a stack of four hundred files removes.

Summary: hours, capstone unit, credentials, track
Three to four lines. Total supervised clinical hours, the capstone unit and its size, the credentials you hold with the issuing body, and the cohort you want. That is the whole job of a new graduate summary, and anything else in it takes space from the four facts a screener is scanning for.
If you worked as a certified nursing assistant, patient care technician, emergency medical technician, medic or monitor tech before licensure, put the number of years in the summary. Prior hospital work is the strongest single predictor a manager has that you will survive your first winter.
Capstone and rotations: write them as jobs, not coursework
The capstone entry gets the facility type, the unit and bed count, the hours, and three bullets. Say how many patients you carried alongside the preceptor and what you performed: IV starts, 12-lead acquisition, drip monitoring, discharge teaching, admission assessments, documentation in the electronic record.
Group the remaining rotations under one heading with hours per specialty. A grid of five rotations at ninety to one hundred eighty hours each proves breadth in four lines, which is all the space breadth deserves once the capstone is on the page.
Do not write bullets that describe nursing school. Attended clinical and followed a preceptor tells a manager nothing. Every line should name a patient population, a procedure or a system you used.
Certifications, competencies and the orientation argument
List every credential with its issuing body and the state for your license. BLS is expected. ACLS, PALS or NRP in hand before you start is a real advantage because the hospital would otherwise pay to send you. A telemetry or rhythm course completed during the program is worth a line for a cardiac track.
Make the orientation argument explicitly through detail: charting system used in rotations, number of IV starts performed, blood administration observed or performed under supervision, restraint and isolation practice, and the hospital system where you did your capstone if you are applying there. Internal candidates with a capstone on the unit are hired first, so say it.
Keywords a residency screener matches on
The recurring terms are new graduate registered nurse, nurse residency, NCLEX, licensure, clinical capstone, preceptorship, patient assessment, medication administration, IV therapy, SBAR handoff, infection control, and the unit name from the posting. Use each one once in the skills block and once in a bullet where it is demonstrated.
Mirror the cohort language exactly. A posting for a critical care residency wants the phrase critical care on the page, not intensive setting or high acuity environment. Software matches strings, and the human after it reads for the same words.

Summary: Newly graduated nurse with a consolidation placement on a 28-bed medicine unit, writing the NCLEX-RN next month, seeking a new graduate position on an adult medicine or surgery unit. Everything below that line matches the template above, with consolidation used as the name for the final placement because that is the word Canadian managers read for.
Two details change between countries. Canadian programs usually award a BScN or BN rather than a BSN, so write the degree exactly as it appears on your transcript. Outside Quebec the entry exam is the NCLEX-RN, while Quebec graduates write the exam set by their provincial order, so name the exam that applies to you.
